M/V Nautilus Explorer
The Nautilus Explorer is a heavy 300 ton ocean going stabilized ship. Sometimes the seas during the crossing are flat calm. Occasionally (maybe once per season) we will experience 3 metre seas. Average seas are 1.5 - 2 metres which is no problem. Especially if guests use "the patch" (scopolomine). Our anchorage at Guadalupe is sheltered and calm.
Why dive with the Nautilus Explorer
All diving is done from a high speed 38 foot dive skiff that is carried on a ramp on the back deck of the Nautilus Explorer. All you have to do is set up your gear at your station on the skiff and we'll look after everything else as we whisk you from dive site to dive site at 35 mph. Currents are easily managed with the help of Captain Mike's expertise and vast knowledge of this area. Your only "job" is to be at the dive briefing on time and then jump in the water when we get onsite. There will always be a divemaster in the water to help out, orientate you on the dive site, critter point and help find cute-looking wolfeels and giant Pacific octopuses (a big one is 12 feet but the world record is 25 feet!). You won't need any help finding friendly stellar sealions and it is quite possible to see 50 or more of these animals per dive at certain sites. And you certainly won't need any help finding nudbranchs as they are everywhere. The dive skiff will follow you along the site and pick you up when you surface. Voila, what could be easier! As the skiff speeds back to the Nautilus Explorer, you will quickly learn to look forward to being met on the back deck by our cheerful happy hostesses with their trays of drinks, hot chocolate, snacks, hand-jacuzzi and fresh towels on your way to the sparkling clear hot-tub.
Ship features
On the Nautilus Explorer you get virtually unlimited diving on these trips (the boat record is 31.5 hours of cage time over 3 dive days), cozy staterooms with side-by-side beds, private heads with showers, and central air conditioning . Lower deck cabins have their own portholes, while the larger hot tub deck executive suites have large windows and outside doors.
We feature very high service levels from our friendly and enthusiastic staff, imaginative and fresh 4-star cuisine (our guests are pretty unanimous in raving about the food we serve) and a spotlessly clean ship maintained to the highest standards (Lloyds Register).
Baked goods are always fresh from our ovens, there is always a snack basket, fruit bowl and bakery basket left out for nibbling on as well as pop, non-alcoholic beverages and sterilized, chlorinated water.
Certified Safe and Seaworthy
The Nautilus Explorer is built and certified to the same exacting international standards as the largest cruise ship, and has earned a SOLAS passenger certificate for short international voyages, the ultimate confirmation of seaworthiness and safety. We're also very particular about keeping the Nautilus Explorer ship-shape and spotlessly clean. In 2001, she received ISM certification from Lloyds Register. This is the marine equivalent of ISO 9000 and is your assurance that the ship's organization and support services are all first-rate. The ISM rating also means that the Nautilus Explorer undergoes regular internal and independent external audits to ensure that the vessel is always safe and well maintained. We are very proud that the Nautilus Explorer is the only Canadian berthed passenger vessel with this certification.
Dive Deck
Inside, our 38' dive skiff, is normally winched up the ramp when we are underway. 24 dive stations on Inde means that your gear never has to get moved around while triple outboard engines allow us to whisk guests out to dive sites at 30 plus knots (43 knots wide open) or putter around dive sites with the jet engine. During warm water trips, this deck is reconfigured with dive benches and individual stations for each diver. The water level platform aft makes it easy to board dive skiffs, inflatables, kayaks and Laser sailboat.
Executive Rooms
Two executive suites are located immediately forward of the hot tub deck. With large picture windows, a private outside entrance, desk, hanging closet and shelves as well as a private washroom with shower, these cabins can definitely be described as "comfortable". Either suite can be configured with either a "quasi-king" or 2 single beds.
Sate Room Executive Room
State Rooms
Typical of the lower deck staterooms, Suite G features side by side berths, "under bed" storage for suitcases, airconditioning and private washroom and shower. Staterooms A and B are configured differently and best suited for couples. All staterooms are aprox 90 sq. ft.
